The Mass Explained

The Church understands the Communion Procession, in fact every procession in liturgy, as a sign of the pilgrim Church, the body of those who believe in Christ, on their way to the Heavenly Jerusalem. All our lives we who believe in Christ are moving in time toward that moment when we will be taken by death from this world and enter into the joy of the Lord in the eternal Kingdom he has prepared for us. The liturgical assembly of the baptized that comes together for the celebration of the Eucharist is a witness to, a manifestation of, the pilgrim Church. When we move in procession, particularly the procession to receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Communion, we are a sign, a symbol of that pilgrim Church "on the way."

For some, however, the experience of the Communion Procession is far more prosaic, analogous perhaps to standing in line in the supermarket or at the motor vehicle bureau. A perception such as this is a dreadfully inaccurate and impoverished understanding of what is a significant religious action. The Communion Procession is an action of the Body of Christ. At Christ's invitation, extended by the priest acting in Christ's person: "Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb," the members of the community move forward to share in the sacred meal, to receive the Body and Blood of Christ which is the sign and the source of their unity. In fact, each time we move forward together to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord, we join the countless ranks of all the baptized who have gone before us, our loved ones, the canonized and uncanonized saints down through the ages, who at their time in history formed a part of this mighty stream of believers.

This action by Christ's body, the Church assembled for the Eucharist, is manifested and supported by the Communion Chant, a hymn in praise of Christ sung by the united voices of those who believe in him and share his life. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal takes this hymn very seriously, mandating that it should begin at the Communion of the priest and extend until the last person has received Communion.

For some, however, the singing of this hymn is perceived as an intrusion on their own prayer, their private thanksgiving after Communion. In fact, however, this hymn is prayer, the corporate thanksgiving prayer of the members of Christ's Body, united with one another. Over and over again the prayers of the liturgy and the norms of the General Instruction emphasize this fundamental concept of the unity of the baptized, stressing that when we come together to participate in the Eucharistic celebration we come, not as individuals, but as united members of Christ's Body. In each of the Eucharistic Prayers, though the petition is worded in slightly different ways, God is asked to send his Holy Spirit to make us one body, one spirit in Christ; the General Instruction admonishes the faithful that "they are to form one body, whether in hearing the Word of God, or in taking part in the prayers and in the singing..." (no. 96). It describes one of the purposes of the opening song of the Mass as to "foster the unity of those who have been gathered" (no. 47), and says of the Communion Chant that "its purpose [is] to express the spiritual union of the communicants by means of the unity of their voices, to show gladness of heart, and to bring out more clearly the 'communitarian' character of the procession to receive the Eucharist" (no. 86).

The General Instruction asks each country's Conference of Bishops to determine the posture to be used for the reception of Communion and the act of reverence to be made by each person as he or she receives Communion. In the United States, the body of Bishops has determined that "[t]he norm... is that Holy Communion is to be received standing, unless an individual member of the faithful wishes to receive Communion while kneeling" and that a bow is the act of reverence made by those receiving (no. 160). This norm is supported by an Instruction by the Holy See regarding the Eucharist: "In distributing Holy Communion it is to be remembered that 'sacred ministers may not deny the sacraments to those who seek them in a reasonable manner, are rightly disposed, and are not prohibited by law from receiving them' (Code of Canon Law, can. 843 § 1; cf. can. 915). Hence any baptized Catholic who is not prevented by law must be admitted to Holy Communion. Therefore, it is not licit to deny Holy Communion to any of Christ's faithful solely on the grounds, for example, that the person wishes to receive the Eucharist kneeling or standing" (Redemptionis Sacramentum, no. 91).

Those who receive Communion may receive either in the hand or on the tongue, and the decision should be that of the individual receiving, not of the person distributing Communion.

If Communion is received in the hand, the hands should first of all be clean. If one is right handed the left hand should rest upon the right. The host will then be laid in the palm of the left hand and then taken by the right hand to the mouth. If one is left-handed this is reversed. It is not appropriate to reach out with the fingers and take the host from the person distributing.

The person distributing Communion says audibly to each person approaching, "The Body of Christ."  This formula should not be altered, as it is a proclamation which calls for a response of faith on the part of the one who receives. The communicant should audibly respond, "Amen," indicating by that response his or her belief that this small wafer of bread, the wine in this chalice are in reality the body and blood of Christ the Lord.

When one receives from the chalice, the same proclamation is made by the person distributing Communion and the Communicant again responds, "Amen." It should be noted that it is never permissible for a person to dip the host he or she has received into the chalice. If, for some reason, the communicant is not able or willing to drink from the cup then that person should receive only under the form of bread.

It seems appropriate to conclude this reflection on the Communion Procession and the reception of Communion with a quotation from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1396:

In Baptism we have been called to form but one body. The Eucharist fulfills this call: "The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread” (1 Cor 10:16-17).

If you are the body and members of Christ, then it is your sacrament that is placed on the table of the Lord; it is your sacrament that you receive. To that which you are you respond “Amen” (“yes, it is true!”) and by responding to it you assent to it. For you hear the words, “the Body of Christ” and respond “Amen.” Be then a member of the Body of Christ that your Amen may be true (St. Augustine, Sermon 272: PL 38, 1247).

La Iglesia entiende la Procesión de la Comunión y, de hecho toda procesión litúrgica, como un signo de la Iglesia peregrina, el cuerpo de aquéllos que creen en Cristo, en su camino hacia la Jerusalén Celestial. A lo largo de nuestras vidas, nosotros, los que creemos en Cristo, nos movemos en el tiempo hacia ese momento en que seremos llevados de este mundo por la muerte y entraremos en el gozo de nuestro Señor, al Reino eterno que nos ha preparado.

La asamblea litúrgica de los bautizados que vienen a reunirse para la celebración de la Eucaristía es un testigo, una manifestación, de la iglesia peregrina. Cuando nos movemos en procesión, particularmente, en la procesión para recibir el cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo en la Comunión, somos un signo, un símbolo de esa Iglesia peregrina “en camino”. Para algunos, sin embargo, la experiencia de la Procesión de la Comunión es mucho más prosaica y hasta análoga con el hacer cola en el supermercado o en la Dirección General de Vehículos Motorizados. Una percepción como ésta es una comprensión terriblemente incorrecta y empobrecida de una acción religiosa significativa.

La Procesión de la Comunión es una acción del Cuerpo de Cristo. Los miembros de la comunidad, respondiendo a la invitación del mismo Cristo por medio del Sacerdote que actúa “en la Persona de Cristo” 1 (Bienaventurados aquéllos que han sido llamados a la cena del Señor) 2, donde se dará el compartir el alimento sagrado, recibido en el cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo, señal y fuente de unidad. De hecho, cada vez que nos disponemos para recibir el cuerpo y la sangre del Señor, nos unimos a los innumerables rangos de todos los bautizados que han muerto antes que nosotros, nuestros seres queridos, los santos canonizados y no canonizados a lo largo de los siglos, quienes en algún momento de la historia formaron parte de este gran multitud de creyentes.

Esta acción del cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia reunida para la Eucaristía, se manifiesta y se apoya en el Himno de la Comunión, un himno de alabanza a Cristo cantado al unísono por las voces de quienes creen en Él y comparten Su vida. La Institución General del Misal Romano toma muy en serio este himno, estableciendo que debe empezar en el momento de la Comunión del sacerdote y que debe extenderse hasta que la última persona haya comulgado.

Sin embargo, algunas personas consideran que cantar este himno es una intromisión en su propia oración, su propia acción de gracias privada después de la Comunión. Sin embargo, este himno es oración, la oración de acción gracias comunitaria de los miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo, mutuamente unidos. Una y otra vez, las plegarias litúrgicas y las normas de la Instrucción General enfatizan este concepto fundamental de la unidad de los bautizados, resaltando que cuando nos reunimos para participar en la celebración Eucarística, venimos no como individuos sino como miembros unidos del Cuerpo de Cristo. En cada una de las Plegarias Eucarísticas, aunque la petición se presenta con pequeñas diferencias, se le pide a Dios que envíe Su Espíritu Santo para hacernos un solo cuerpo, un solo Espíritu; la Instrucción General invita a los fieles a que “actúen, pues, como un solo cuerpo tanto al escuchar la Palabra de Dios, como al tomar parte en las oraciones y en los cantos y, en especial, al ofrecer comunitariamente el sacrificio y al participar todos juntos en la mesa del Señor” (IGMR # 96), describe como uno de los propósitos del canto de entrada a la Misa intensifica la unión de los que se han reunido 3. Del Cántico de Comunión dice que su función es expresar abiertamente la unión espiritual de los comulgantes por medio de la unidad de sus voces, y de resaltar el carácter comunitario de la Procesión de Comunión 4.

Para algunos de nosotros es difícil aceptar esta insistencia en que la Misa es la acción de una comunidad en lugar de un acto individual de nuestra propia fe y piedad; sin embargo, es importante que hagamos todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance para que así sea. El propio Cristo en la última Cena le imploró a Su Padre: "Padre Santo, cuida en tu nombre a los que me has dado…para que todos sean uno. Como tú, Padre, en mí y yo en ti, que ellos también sean uno en nosotros, para que el mundo crea que tú me has enviado"(Juan 17:11b; 21) 5. El Bautismo nos ha unido a Cristo y a nuestro prójimo como la vid a sus ramas. La vida de Cristo, el Espíritu Santo, nos anima a cada uno de nosotros de manera individual y a todos colectivamente y guía nuestros esfuerzos por llegar a ser uno en Cristo.

Finalmente, el hecho de que la Procesión de Comunión es una acción profundamente religiosa nos dice algo sobre la manera en que debemos participar en esta procesión. Somos el Cuerpo de Cristo, avanzando para recibir a Cristo que nos hace uno con Él mismo y con nuestro prójimo. Nuestra procesión debe avanzar con dignidad; ¡nuestro comportamiento debe ser como el de aquéllos que saben que han sido redimidos por Cristo y que están viniendo a recibir a su Dios!

Quienes reciben la Comunión pueden hacerlo tanto en la mano como en la lengua; sin embargo, la decisión final está en la persona que la recibe, no en la persona que la distribuye. Si la Comunión se recibe en la mano, las manos deben estar completamente limpias. Si uno es diestro, la mano izquierda debe descansar sobe la mano derecha. La hostia será luego depositada sobre la palma de la mano izquierda y luego tomada por la mano derecha hasta llevarla a la boca. Si una persona es zurda, se hará del modo contrario. Es inapropiado tomarla con los dedos directamente de la mano de la persona que la distribuye.

La persona que distribuye la Comunión dice a cada persona que se aproxima y de manera que se oiga, "El Cuerpo de Cristo". Esta fórmula no debe ser alterada ya que es una proclamación que invita a una respuesta de fe de parte de la persona que la recibe. El comulgante debe responder de manera audible "Amén", indicando, por su respuesta, su creencia de que este pequeño pedazo de pan y el vino de este cáliz son en realidad el cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo, el Señor.

Cuando uno recibe la Comunión del cáliz, la persona que distribuye la Comunión hace la misma proclamación y el comulgante nuevamente responde "Amén" . Cabe notar que no está permitido que una persona introduzca la hostia que ha recibido dentro del cáliz. Si, por alguna razón, el comulgante no puede o no desea beber del cáliz, debe recibir la Comunión sólo en la forma de pan.

Parece apropiado concluir esta reflexión sobre la Procesión de Comunión y la recepción de la Comunión con una cita del Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica:

"En el Bautismo fuimos llamados a no formar más que un solo cuerpo (Cf. 1Co 12, 13). La Eucaristía realiza esta llamada: ‘El cáliz de bendición que bendecimos, ¿no es acaso comunión con la Sangre de Cristo? Y el pan que partimos ¿no es comunión con el Cuerpo de Cristo? Porque aún siendo muchos, un solo pan y un solo cuerpo somos, pues todos participamos de un solo pan’ (1 Co 10, 16- 17).

Si ustedes mismos son Cuerpo y miembros de Cristo, son el sacramento que es puesto sobre la mesa del Señor, y reciben este sacramento suyo. Responden "Amén" (es decir, ‘sí’, es verdad) a lo que reciben, con lo que, respondiendo, lo reafirman. Oyes decir "el Cuerpo de Cristo" y respondes "Amén". Por lo tanto, sé tú verdadero miembro de Cristo para que tu "Amén" sea también verdadero" (San Agustín , sermón 272)” (CCC n. 1396).
