Confirmation Sponsor Information

When choosing your Confirmation Sponsor, there are many things to consider.  A sponsor at Confirmation is a person who supports the Candidate in their commitment to follow the way of Jesus.  This person's life should exemplify a Catholic Christian.  A sponsor stands with you as the Bishop accepts your commitment and confirms you.  A man or a woman may be a sponsor for either male or female candidates.  Often times, the person who was your sponsor at Baptism is asked again be your sponsor at Confirmation.  A qualified brother or sister may also be a sponsor.

However, a mother or father may not be a sponsor for their child. (Canon 874, Code of Canon law, revised 11/27/83).  A person may be a sponsor for more than one candidate.

A. To be a sponsor a person MUST be a baptized Catholic.

B. To be a sponsor a person MUST be Confirmed.

C. To be a sponsor a person MUST have received the sacrament of Holy Eucharist.

D. To be a sponsor a person MUST be a practicing Catholic - leading a life in harmony with faith and living in accordance with the laws of the church.

E. To be a sponsor a person CANNOT be your mother or father.

You choose a sponsor because you believe this person to be a model Christian you want to imitate.  After Confirmation, your sponsor is there with you to support you in your commitment.
